though i have been concentrating on the "early years" 68-72 for awhile now....from time to time scarlet>fire, help on the way, eyes of the world, terrapin station and the rest beckon, and i must venture into the SQUISHY WAH-WAH years for my electric fix...

yesterday, checking out 3-09-81 i was pleasantly surprised by the 10 minute china cat played that night.

this is perhaps THE #1 SONG that i've always wanted the band to play LONGER....it is one of the dead's signature unique grooves and lends itself to myriad snakey leads and tight group interplay....BUT, up through 74 this tune RARELY gets stretched out for more than 6 Minutes.

so i'm thinking, WITH BRENT MYDALND they started stretching it out more....but these are the years least represented in my collection.

PLEASE, wise and knowledgeable archivists, CITE YOUR PICKS FOR HOT, LONG CHINA CATS

What I'm reading into your request are China's with a nice long drawn out jam leading into Rider. 10/28/79 Cape Cod http://www.archive.org/details/gd79-10-28.sbd.miller.30655.sbeok.flacf features an exceptional transition jam with Rider not formally starting until about 8 minutes in. Now, while not as long, the 11/24/79 Golden Hall http://www.archive.org/details/gd79-11-24.sbd.clugston.10022.sbeok.shnf monster features my favorite transition with Phil leading the way.

that's the hard part....ultimately the transition is where the best jam usually resides, read:8-27-72....

but i am after long chinas before the transition...on the 81 i cited...the band tries to transition but jer is reluctant and just stays on the china theme.

The Cape Cod show I mentioned has a similar occurence with the band all but starting into Rider about 5 minutes in, but Jerry deciding that he wasn't quite ready to jump in yet and pulling everyone back.

It's just wonderful when Jerry takes charge. The classic occurrence being this one from 1970 where the rest of the band go full tilt into NFA and Jerry has to forcefully remind them that they aren't quite done with St Stephen.

In these occurrences, Jerry shows himself to be the true Lachesis of the Dead, but instead of deciding the length or measure of one's life, he does it with songs, deciding when and where they will end.

One you might want to try is from 8/7/82. this is a Dicks Picks and a great version of China > Rider. The transition into Rider is fairly jammed out. Brent is on Fire!!!!!!!

I'll second that recommendation. My favorite version. Dick picked a great show here, though the 8/10 show or just about anything from late July early August '82 would have been just as nice.

1974 has a lot of special China/Riders, but the one on Dicks Picks 12 with its jammed intro might interest you.

Thank you!...I was sitting here going "up through '74...what?"

Many Dead songs had several peak years, but 1974 is far and away definitive year for this pairing. Many great ones to choose from but I'll still go with the Provy show at the end of June- yes, most are familiar with it but it's a classic for a reason.

the main thing i was interested in with the post was length and not so much the gerth.

granted the superiority of the 74 china>riders....which ones stretch out to 10 minutes before the beginning of i know you rider

I was trying to be good but with the risk of sounding like Pat Kelley with his 6-25-85 fetish, I just have yet to find a better one than 5-19-74.

Agree that 1974 was THE year for the most consistent ChinaRider monsters.

The Dix Pick mentioned above, which has 2 1/2 mins. of gorgeous SPACE before China even begins is to me, still the best. And they groove on the China theme for a good 3 mins. before even beginning the first verse...

2nd place for me is a tie between Johnny's 5/19/74 and a brilliant one from 2/24/74:

Outrageous transition MLB/Feelin'Groovy section (whatever you wanna call it) into the Rider.

Grand version.

I think '82 was the best year for China Riders. Tough to compare to the early 70's versions, but as for the 80's, I think '82 takes the cake.

8/7/82, 8/10/82, 9/5/82

also 8/21/83 is a great one

word to that....as a pairing...

i was just kind of leaving rider out of it so to speak -- just because there is always that slightly grey area in the transition where the rhythm section is starting up the rider groove and jerry and bobby do there thing....before settling proper into i know you rider

Maybe not what you're looking for, but give a listen to the absolutely unique China from Laguna Seca - 7-29-88.

Right when you're expecting Rider they slide into eight minutes of Crazy Fingers before Rider belatedly comes along. First time I heard it was a genuine WTF moment. To my knowledge they never repeated the experiment.

It's a top notch AUD - no excuse not to download!

If you are adventureous try 12-10-89. Long version with lots of jamming. A tad different because BH is guesting on accordion but it's not overhelming. I really like this one because it's unique
